How is a high technology stopper manufactured? Nomacork Green Line
- Sugar cane: The plantations used by its supplier (Braskem, Brazil) are grown in a
sustainable manner and respecting the triple impact: no child labor, no sugar
for human consumption and no burning of crops for replanting.
- Bioethanol production: Bioethanol is produced from sugar cane through a
- Dehydration and polymerization: The bioethanol is taken to a refining plant
where it is transformed into bioethylene. This bioethylene can be polymerized
- Coextrusion: Nomacorc stoppers are composed of the core of the closure
coming out of the main extruder and the skin that adheres to the body coming
from the secondary extruder. The core is a foam with a certain density that
does not change over time and the skin is flexible to fit the neck of the bottle.
The secondary extruder provides the coating, which is then cooled and cut.
- Printing and treatment: All Nomacor stoppers are printed on the top and with
the logo corresponding to the client.
Quality: Nomacorc guarantees that 100% of its corks are free of “cork flavor” or TCA.
Each stopper assures sensory neutrality to faithfully express the wine that the
winemaker designed from the vineyard.
Sustainability: Nomacorc is continuously researching to reduce the carbon footprint of
its products with the goal to reach neutrality along its portfolio.
Removal: Nomacorc stoppers easily slide when being opened and they are closed
following the same ease.
Today’s consumers are increasingly aware of the impact that each purchase decision
generates. When we talk about wine closures, the alternatives are multiple: one-piece
natural corks, micro agglomerates, plastic synthetics, screw caps, etc. The case of
Nomacorc is presented as innovative: it is a type of technical closure, meaning that it
prevents TCA or “cork taste”, that is manufactured from a renewable raw material: the
When the wine consumer chooses their bottle at the supermarket, they hardly know
these options in detail and what they imply for the preservation of the wine and the
environment. For this reason, Nomacorc stoppers make reference to sustainability
using phrases such as “Because we take care of the environment, we use Green Line
stoppers” -in Sylvestra wines, from Winery Bressia – or “This cork is made of 100%
renewable materials of plant origin” -in the wines of the Línea de Enólogos of the
Nomacorc belongs to the brand portfolio of Vinventions, the international company of
wine closures. The company’s origin is Belgian / North American and it produces
different closure systems for still wines from around the world and, here in South
America, they are based in Argentina.
Why is wine closure so important?
Those who enjoy drinking wine know the importance of the stopper: It does not have
to affect the drink sensorially, it must be easy to extract and reinsert and, of course,
it has to preserve the opening ceremony of the bottle. In addition to all this,
Nomacorc Green Line stoppers fulfill a function that perhaps eludes the common
consumer and that is of vital importance to safeguard the quality of the wine: that
there is a controlled entry of oxygen into the bottle. Wine is a living being and needs
micro-oxygenation to continue its evolution inside the bottle. Each stopper in the
Nomacorc portfolio guarantees a precise, homogeneous and transparent oxygen
intake, which can be observed in the transfer rates indicated in the product sheets.
This information is key for the winemaker because it allows them to know what the
specific stopper should be according to the profile of the wine and the ideal moment
In the search for sustainable production, the entire Nomacorc production cycle allows
the stopper to reach the consumers’ homes with a minimal or neutral carbon
footprint. Although the stopper is not biodegradable, it is completely recyclable, unlike
micro-agglomerated corks which, due to their polyurethane component, are not.
Chosen by the most prestigious Argentine wineries
Many wineries have trusted Nomacorc to seal their wines: Zuccardi, Grupo Peñaflor,
Salentein, Los Haroldos, Trivento, Bodega de Fin del Mundo, Finca La Anita, Finca la
Celia, Norton, Yacochuya, among other hundreds of clients.
One of its main clients, Grupo Peñaflor, states: “We use Nomacorc stoppers in various
product lines, complying with the highest standards of use and ensuring Grupo
Peñaflor’s demanding oenological requirements. Some of these caps contribute to
caring for the environment by coming from raw materials of renewable origin”.
Franco Falasco, from Bodega Los Haroldos, highlights the wide variety of stoppers that
the portfolio has: “We have been working with Nomacorc for more than eight years.
They have a very reliable capping system, free of TCA and they perfectly fit both the
medium and high-end categories of still wines. For Los Haroldos Estate and Reserva we
use Select Green”.
Nomacorc Green Line stoppers close wines from all wine-growing areas in Argentina,
from Salta to Patagonia, including Cuyo -Mendoza and San Juan. Bodega Putruele, the
emblematic San Juan winery has been choosing Nomacorc for several years now.
Carlos Putruele assures that “It is an excellent stopper. It expands quickly and produces
an unalterable seal in terms of unpleasant odors and flavors that can be generated
with other stoppers. It keeps the qualities of the wine in optimal conditions. Although
at the beginning we had some doubts about using an innovative product for the
industry, today we can say that the results were more than satisfactory”.
From the south of our country, Bodega Del Fin Del Mundo has a strong commitment to
the environment. They are focused on turning all their practices, from the vineyard to
the winery, into more sustainable ones. “The final link in wine production is the closure
system and, for this reason, we choose Nomacorc: they guarantee that our wines are
cared for so that they arrive lively to each cup and, at the same time, they seek to
generate a positive impact on the environment”.
A stopper for each wine
One out of every four bottles sold in Argentina has a Nomacorc stopper and the brand
today offers five types of products, taking into account the wide range of wines on the
market. Each of them is consistent with the life cycle of the wines according to each
segment: Reserva (for 25-year-olds), Select Green (for up to 15-year-olds), Classic
Green (for medium/high-range wines), Smart Green (for entry-level wines) and Value
(high-turnover wines). The company is conducting industrial tests for the use of
recycled material in several of these lines in order to guarantee the infinite life cycle of
